Teenage Lobotomy

overview

We are provided with endless entertainment, fun in a loop and eye candy. Everything to make us happy, euphoric and blissful.

Two musicians, two electric guitars, two chairs, two amplifier stacks: “Teenage Lobotomy” uses music to explore two dualities. Firstly that of the theater goer, who holds music as a given element, slightly in the background, often illustrative, never on a par with the other theatrical elements. Secondly that of the spectator-consumer, permanently exposed to a wide range of commercial, political or social propaganda, who comes to the theater to take a little break in its comfortable and soothing obscurity.

Christian Garcia-Gaucher accepts this double challenge. He tries on one hand to put the music back at the centre of the performing arts, taking advantage of the enhanced attention theaters provide their audience to hopefully generate an instant of sonic consciousness. He also tries to make the audience face its daily dose of lobotomy, insidiously exploiting this moment of relative relaxation to smuggle residual brainwashing back onto the stage.

“Teenage Lobotomy” is Christian Garcia-Gaucher’s fourth solo project after the Velma era and could easily be described as contemporary opera: the traditional and fundamental forms of this artistic discipline remain at the core of the process while being revisited by a surge of “here and now”.
